Wildfires are a real risk. More than 1,000 wildfires have been recorded across England and Wales in 2026.
Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service are making people aware that even despite the recent rain, the ground is still extremely dry and flammable and to continue to follow local and national guidance to help keep the community and our outdoor spaces safe.

How You Can Help Prevent Wildfires
During periods of hot, dry weather:
Avoid activities that could start a fire
- Do not use disposable barbecues in the countryside, parks, heathland or moorland.
- Do not light campfires in open spaces.
- Do not release sky lanterns.
- Avoid using fireworks near dry grass, crops or vegetation.
Dispose of litter responsibly
- Never discard cigarettes, matches or smoking materials on the ground.
- Take all litter home with you.
- Do not leave glass bottles behind, as sunlight can sometimes ignite dry vegetation.
Follow local advice
- Check and follow any fire risk warnings or restrictions issued by local authorities and emergency services.
- Take extra care during periods of drought, hot weather and strong winds.
All of these simple actions can help prevent a small spark becoming a major wildfire.
