Take in panoramic views from one of Shropshire’s most iconic ridges. With easy access from the car park and gentle paths, this viewpoint is ideal for taking in the scenery or watch gliders soar across the sky. Breathe the fresh air, and let the Long Mynd lift your spirits.

Getting there & parking

Arrival: Roads to the viewpoint are steep and single track in places. These are not maintained in winter and may be closed. It is strongly advised to contact The Midland Gliding Club if there is concern about the weather and road conditions.

Car parking

Parking: Roadside parking provided. Signs request drivers to park considerately at a slight angle to the road together. No parking charges.

Accessible Parking: No designated Blue Badge parking is provided.

Surface Type of Car Park: Grass and loose stone. This is uneven due to geological composition.

Train Stations: Nearest Train Station is in Church Stretton.

Routes & Trails

Level routes/Trails: A road and permissive path provide access to the Midland Gliding Club. As an active airfield, drivers are advised that on flying days, the vehicular gate will require opening and closure.

Route Width: Routes 1800 millimetres or wider.

Gradient:  Slights slopes are provided on the permissive path to the Midland Gliding Club.

Surface Type: Grass surface to the viewpoint and permissive path to the Midland Gliding Club. A combination of loose and compact gravel for the road to the café.

 

Barriers

Swing Gates: There are two single manual gates to the viewpoint and to the Midland Gliding Club. These open in one direction.

Latched Gates: The gates to the viewpoint have a latch lock on one side. The first gate from the roadside parking has a width of 1186 millimetres. The second gate into the enclosure is 958 millimetres wide. The pedestrian gate to the Midland Gliding Club can be opened from both directions.

Rest stops

Seating: One bench with armrests and backrest is provided at the viewing point.

Picnic Area: Two standard picnic benches are provided.

Level Access to Seating: Level access to seating is provided.

Distance between Seating Areas: Seating is limited to the viewpoint.

Waymarking

Finger Posts: Finger posts on entry to the Midland Gliding Club indicate public rights of way and permissive routes.

Information Boards Available: Information is provided for pilots.

Pictorial Information Boards: Pictorial information is provided for pilots.

Touch: Heathland plants on the permissive routes, such as bracken and heather.
