Paddle Sports on the Mere

Canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding and boating are a great way to enjoy The Mere and are permitted all year round once a membership form is filled in and an annual fee is paid.

The membership allows the use of a canoe/kayak/paddle board/non-motorised boat on The Mere at Ellesmere as often as they wish for a period of 12 months from date of joining (excluding dates when events taking are taking place).

If annual membership isn’t for you, it’s possible to take advantage of our day rate.

Membership details, conditions of use and important information

  • Annual membership fees are £35 per adult, £17.50 for under 16s or £90 family – 2 x adult + 3 x under 16s. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Day rate £7
  • The no-go areas are shown on the Ellesmere Boating Map (click here). These are strictly observed to protect wildlife & marginal plant growth. Please note this includes a 10-metre margin around all of the mere apart from the launch area.
  • Buoyancy Aid/lifejackets must always be worn by everyone on the water.
  • Boats must be carried/wheeled to the launch area.
  • Please respect all other users of The Mere.
  • There are no rescue facilities at The Mere. Anyone putting a boat on the water does so entirely at their own risk.
  • There are no changing facilities at The Mere.
  • Blue green algae can appear at The Mere.

Full terms and conditions are on the Ellesmere Boating Application 2026 membership form. The form should be completed and returned together with payment. You will be able to begin boating on The Mere once membership has been confirmed.
