Leavesley Aviation near Bishops Castle – Tandem and BHPA approved school for paragliding and day tasters.
Long Mynd Soaring Club promotes hang gliding and paragliding over Shropshire for qualified pilots. The site gives a list of launch sites in Shropshire with an overview of each.
Gliding
Gliding, which began in the 1920s, is governed by the British Gliding Association (BGA). It is both a recreational activity and a competitive air sport, and started on the 1450ft high Long Mynd, near Church Stretton, as early as 1930.
Midland Gliding Club on the Long Mynd, which is affiliated to the BGA, started in 1934 and is one of the oldest Gliding Clubs in the Country. Total beginners to experienced competitors can take to the Shropshire skies there. Ridge, thermal and wave soaring. Winch launch.
RAF Shawbury Gliding Club is based at RAF Shawbury and is affiliated to the British Gliding Association (BGA) and the RAF Gliding & Soaring Association. Whilst primarily aimed at members of the service community, civilians can also experience the thrill of gliding at RAF Shawbury by redeeming a voucher bought from the BGA. Launches by aerotow.
Shropshire Aero Club based at Sleap Airfield near Wem provides year round towed wave soaring from tarmac runways for experienced pilots.
