Llanfair Waterdine Circular Walk 3 – Around Red Wood

A quiet road ramble on the border

A 3.25 mile easy walk around Red Wood, to the north west of Llanfair Waterdine village.  This walk is all on country lanes.

Llanfair Waterdine

Llanfair Waterdine village and parish is situated on the southern edge of the Clun Forest, a remote and very rural part of Shropshire, which is only partly forested.  Historically the village was in Wales, as it lies to the west of Offa’s Dyke, but is now in England.  The village is sometimes considered more Welsh in character with its steep wooded interlocking hills. The ancient boundary, Offa’s Dyke winds scenically across the Parish, Llanfair Waterdine being at the same time both part of The Shropshire Hills National Landscape and the Welsh Marches.  This is very much sheep and cattle country so please bear this in mind if you are taking a dog out walking with you.

Walk directions

  1. Start

Start/Finish at Dutlas notice board. Turn left to Coed-y-Hendre Mill, Coed y Hendre and Tyn y Coed farmhouse.

  2. Step 2

After Tyn-Coed at next crossroads (signed Cwm Farm ahead) turn right up the hill. In Spring the wood on your right is a vibrant blue of bluebells woods, whilst to your left you can see down to Cwm Farm and its fishponds .

  3. Step 3

Approximately 150 metres before you get to the dwelling marked Pen-Llan on the map (and Llanwooley by its owners) you have the option to take the footpath on the right over fields which re-joins the lane near Upper Tregodfa. Follow the path through the stiles and gates and, just after you pass the back of Upper Tregodfa the path goes steeply down to re-join the lane at Lower Tregodfa farm.

Otherwise just stay on the lane.

  4. Step 4

At the T-junction at bottom of a steep downward hill turn right. Wait awhile at the gates opposite and take in the views of the Teme Valley towards the main village of Llanfair, and Knighton beyond.

  5. Step 5

Follow the lane, ignoring a turning to your left, past Lower Tregodfa farm, Upper Tregodfa, the Runnis Chapel and The Runnis back to your car.
