Oswestry Hill Fort

This is a walk from Oswestry bus station to the town’s magnificent hill fort.  The walk is mostly on pavement, then out onto a field to the hill fort.  To get up to the fort you need to climb about 100 wide steps.  Once you get to the top you will be rewarded with panoramic views down to south Shropshire and across into Wales and up north to the Cheshire plains.  You should allow a couple of hours to do this at a leisurely pace and appreciate your surroundings.

This walk is for people who want a short walk but be rewarded by visiting an ancient monument and appreciating wonderful views.  For more information about what to do in and around Oswestry, go to the Visit Oswestry website.

Walk directions

  1. Start

    Exit the Bus Station towards the Railway Tavern, and turn right down Beatrice Street.

  2. Step 2

    After a couple of hundred yards turn left into Gittin Street and go up this road.

  3. Step 3

    Go Straight over crossroads and continue up Gittin Street with school on the right.

  4. Step 4

    At junction bear right into Gatacre Avenue.

  5. Step 5

    Walk through the hedge at the side of car park and turn right onto an enclosed footpath.

  6. Step 6

    At the top, go through the kissing gate and diagonally across the field to another kissing gate in the opposite corner.

  7. Step 7

    Go straight over the lane to another kissing gate.

  8. Step 8

    Walk up steps to top of hill fort and walk around the top for spectacular views.

  9. Step 9

    Return down steps.

  10. Step 10

    Go through kissing gate and straight across the road to retrace your steps back to the bus station. There are other paths lower down the ramparts that can also be followed, and by which you can make your own route around the fort.
