Stokesay Craven Arms’ most tragic family. Three members died of the flu pandemic within a single week in February 1919.
There are stained glass windows to ‘Shropshire’s pioneer aviator’ and the family grave where Lt Edward Hotchkiss, after a funeral with full military honours is buried, killed on manoeuvres in September 1912.
Halford Both stories are surpassed by the least well-known. It took local historians and Keith to unravel the love story behind the War Memorial Lychgate. Daughter of the local vicar, married a railway fireman. He rose to Regimental Sergeant Major but died of malaria in Salonika days before the end of the war. 45 years a widow on her own grave she left a moving dedication to her husband
