Getting there & parking
Poles Coppice is a peaceful woodland retreat about 1km southwest of Pontesbury and 10km from Shrewsbury. It’s open all year round, with two car parks for easy access.
Follow the lane from Pontesbury through Pontesbury Hill to the site (Grid Ref: SJ39280482). From here, a network of paths leads you through woodland and fields. Picnic tables are dotted around, so bring a flask and enjoy the views.

Walk Among Bluebells
In spring, the woodland floor becomes a carpet of bluebells and stitchwort—a perfect backdrop for a picnic.
Explore the Quarry

What's special about...
This 30-hectare site is steeped in history. Once part of an ancient coppiced woodland, it supplied timber for local industries like coal mining and leather tanning. Quarrying began in the 18th century and continued until 1971, leaving behind dramatic rock faces and open habitats that now support orchids, betony, and rare butterflies.

Today, Poles Coppice is a haven for wildlife. Hazel dormice nest in honeysuckle bark, six species of bat roost in old quarry sheds, and purple hairstreak butterflies flutter in the treetops. Thanks to conservation work, the site’s mix of woodland, grassland, and quarry habitats continues to thrive—making it one of Shropshire’s hidden gems
