Church Stretton Circular Walk 4 – Cwms Lane

A 5 mile circular walk from Church Stretton with fantastic views of Caer Caradoc

The walk begins in the picturesque market town of Church Stretton, located in the heart of the Shropshire Hills. It takes you across the A49 by a narrow passage known locally as Coffin Lane or the Narrows It is said this was built for people to carry coffins to the cemetery out of sight of the shoppers in Sandford Ave. The path takes you uphill through Snatchfield, an ancient meadowland, and up to Gaerstones Farm. The walk then takes you around one side of Hope Bowdler valley with fantastic view of Caer Caradoc and returns along the other side of the valley, providing views of Hope Bowdler ridge. In the town centre, you’ll find a variety of independent shops, cafés, restaurants, and pubs, many of which date back to the Edwardian period.

Walk directions

  1. Step 1

Walk south along High Street, passing the Bucks Head pub on your right. Just before the Kings Arms, turn left into the passageway which runs beside it. Follow this passageway which crosses over two roads, a railway bridge, the A49 and continue straight ahead until you reach Watling Street South.

  2. Step 2

Turn left onto Watling Street South, take the first right into Clive Ave and almost immediately bear left onto Snatchfield Lane and then follow the Bridleway sign right which takes you up a pathway and onto a road. Go straight across to continue on the Bridleway up a farm track.

  3. Step 3

Soon after passing Snatchfield Farmhouse, go through a gate into a field. Follow the path which then bears left towards the far corner of the field diagonally opposite. At the top of the field the path becomes narrower and leads to a metal gate. Go through the gate, cross the small bridge and turn left to follow the path through the trees, keeping generally close to the fence on your left hand side.

  4. Step 4

After a while go through farm gate on the left and turn right into Hazler Road. Go to the end of the road. Take farm track opposite signposted Gaerstones Farm. Continue along the farm track through a gate into a field. Stay on the main track which goes gently uphill to a gate into the grounds of Cwms Farm

  5. Step 5

Almost immediately turn right and climb up grassy slope to go through another gate. Turn left and follow footpath along side of the valley with wonderful views of Caer Caradoc on the left. Keep to path until it eventually bears left to reach a gate.

  6. Step 6

Go through gate. Follow path bearing right around the hillock crossing to the other side of the valley. Turn left onto Cwms lane. The track heads back along the other side of the valley until it reaches a ford. Cross over ford and continue on path to go through a gate into a field.

  7. Step 7

Turn left and follow the edge of the field, keeping the hedge to your left. Ignore the gate halfway across the field to the left of the footpath. Continue around the edge of the field until it bears right to take you to a gate.

  8. Step 8

Go through the gate, turn left, follow the metalled track to a road. Go straight ahead onto Watling Street North (not left up the hill!) which comes out at Sandford Avenue. Turn right and cross the A49 at the traffic lights and back into Church Stretton.
