Shropshire's Great Outdoors

Church Stretton Circular Walk 5 – Townbrook Hollow

A 3 mile circular walk from Church Stretton climbing steeply up the Long Mynd to enjoy spectacular views

The walk begins in the picturesque market town of Church Stretton, located in the heart of the Shropshire Hills. It takes you up along the edge of Ashlet Hill to a high point on the Long Mynd which provides excellent views over the Stretton Valley. The route then takes a more gentle descent down the valley by Townbrook Hollow and through Rectory wood back to Church Stretton. In the town centre, you’ll find a variety of independent shops, cafés, restaurants, and pubs, many of which date back to the Edwardian period.

Bus service: 435 Shrewsbury to Ludlow

Train station: Church Stretton

Walk directions

  1. Step 1

Starting from the Square, walk up Church Way by the side of the church and go through the gates at the road end ahead into Rectory Field. After going through the kissing gate climb up the field, ignoring the steps on your right. At the top of the field pass through a kissing gate on the left into a small car park.

  2. Step 2

Turn right onto the road and after 200 metres look for a footpath on the right by the side of a bungalow. Turn right and take this path, which is called the Hundred Steps for a reason! At the top turn right after going through the kissing gate.

  3. Step 3

Follow the path and after 75 metres bear left up a steep rough path. This soon bends to the left and becomes a very clear path. Keep climbing. The path eventually evens out. At first junction of paths keep right and also at second junction keep right. Travel along the edge of Ashlet Hill with views of Townbrook Valley on your right.

  4. Step 4

As you approach the head of Townbrook Valley, bear to the right to go around the head of the valley to the path on the far side, going over a rocky area and a small streamFollow the footpath which takes you down Townbrook Hollow (Valley).

  5. Step 5

Just after going past an old reservoir at the bottom of the valley, continue straight ahead into Rectory Wood via a kissing gate. Keep to the low path, ignoring path across slab bridge. Continue on this lower path, passing a pond and eventually bearing right to meet a kissing gate opposite a bench.

  6. Step 6

Go through the gate and turn left down the steps into Rectory Field and back to start point in The Square.
