Blocks of rock, bigger than fridges, were hauled out of this quarry to make churches and bridges. The stone would have been hauled out by teams of horses pulling big heavy wagons. English Bridge, Welsh Bridge in Shrewsbury were both built from Grinshill stone. So was Shrewsbury and Haughmond Abbey and Grinshill Church (among many others).
You’ll see people have carved their names into the viewpoint rocks here for years. Over 200 million years ago something else left its mark here. It was a small lizard-like dinosaur called a Rhynchosaur. It didn’t carve its footprints but left them in the rock when it was still sandy mud. Fossil skeletons of Rhynchosaurs have also been found here.
Corbet Wood is 9 miles north of Shrewsbury to the left of the A49. Turn off at Preston Brockhurst towards Clive; then take the next left to Corbet Wood Car Park.
