A gentle two mile circular ramble from the Discovery Centre along the River Onny. Enjoy the riverside trees and flowers, and look out for river birds such as Dipper, Wagtail and Kingfisher.
River Onny
The Onny is fringed for much of its length with alder trees. Alders and willows are the only common trees that can survive right on the riverbank with their roots below water level. Alder wood was once a valuable timber in Shropshire. Riverside trees were coppiced (their stems regularly cut to ground level) to make into clog soles.
The riverside meadow tells the history of the changing course of the river. Meandering depressions in the field, with the occasional willow tree alongside, sketch out where the natural bed of the river once flowed.
