Hodnet Walk 6 – Hodnet to Fauls – Two Parishes Walk

A moderate 8 mile circular walk (with the option to shorten it to 6.5 miles)

A moderate 8 mile circular walk (with the option to shorten it to 6.5 miles) passing through varied countryside between the villages of Hodnet and Fauls.

Hodnet

The Civil Parish of Hodnet, in North East Shropshire, is made up from four areas each containing once independent villages and hamlets. To the north-west of Hodnet is Marchamley, to the north-east Wollerton and to the south the settlement of Peplow.  The name Hodnet is derived from ‘old’ Welsh hawdd ‘pleasant/peaceful’ + nant ‘valley/stream,’ and is usually interpreted as meaning pleasant valley.  The village itself has many interesting builings, it’s oldest dating back to 1546, including Hodnet Hall, the Bear Inn and St Luke’s Church and there are also a Norman castle mound.  Once a busy thoroughfare to Staffordshire along the A53 the building of the Hodnet bypass has afforded the village a quieter atmosphere and is well worth a visit.

See the village website for a guide to some of the historic buildings and sites around Hodnet Hodnet Village website

Fauls

Fauls is a small village situated 3 miles outside of Prees and belongs to the parish of Prees.

Walk directions

  1. Start

To start, go up Hearne Lane to a stile on the right. Cross it and walk uphill past some (often dry) pools to another stile. Turn right then left to join a field track leading up to a Viewpoint with Countryside Views.

  2. Step 2

Near the end of the track bear left to a stile/field gate then follow a track to Long Lane, which you cross. Now, keeping a hedge on your right, look for a bridge/stile at ‘A’. Here, bear left across the field and turn right to walk down to a bridge/stile.

  3. Step 3

Now go uphill to a field gate by Field Farm, then left down its drive to a stile on the right. Cross it and 2 stiles to reach a lane, where you turn right then left over another stile.

  4. Step 4

Go diagonally right to reach 3 close stiles, the last with a bridge onto Wood Lane. Now go up the drive of ‘Woodside’ to a stile on the left.

  5. Step 5

After 3 more stiles walk across a field to a stile at ‘B’. Cross it and, with a hedge on your left, head to a hedge gap and turn left, then right. The path soon becomes a concrete track with a Viewpoint of the Hawkstone Hills—and into Wales. At Fauls Farm turn right and go up a lane, then turn right to reach the church. To return, via ‘C’, walk on and take a pedestrian gate on the right (by ‘phone mast). A field gate on the left plus 2 stiles lead you to ‘B’, from where you can return to the start.

Option. At ‘C’ follow the lane to ‘D’, then go through a field gate on the right. After crossing a stile and bridge, head diagonally right, past a farmyard, to a stile. Turn right and go through a field gate, then turn left and head to a field gate onto Wood Lane. Cross it and the stile opposite.

Note. The true path from ‘E’ to ‘F’ is hard to follow, so use an unofficial route (red arrows) down the a field, via a stile or field gate to ‘F’. From ‘F’ head to a stile, then a bridge and another stile, then walk up a field to 2 close pedestrian gates. In the next field turn right and follow the hedge around to a stile and a bridge at ‘A’, from where you can return to the start.
