Step out of Montgomery for a 3 mile circular walk onto field paths giving delightful views and a flavour of the Montgomeryshire countryside.

Montgomery

Montgomery is an historic Border market town situated in the Welsh Marches and is the old county town of Montgomeryshire. There is a mixture of Georgian, Victorian and much earlier half timbered architecture . The whole town within the ancient walls is a Conservation Area and is the jewel at the heart of the designated Outstanding Historic Landscape Area of the Vale of Montgomery.

The town was granted a Royal Charter in 1227 to enable it to build a wall and a ditch for protection and to hold fairs and markets. These continue today. The street plan has changed little in almost eight centuries; being laid out on the original medieval street pattern at the foot of an imposing cliff crowned with the ruins of Montgomery Castle which is a CADW protected site. It is only a mile from the Shropshire border and Offa’s Dyke National Trail which attracts both national and international walkers. (Words from Montgomery website)

Ffridd Faldwyn

Ffridd Faldwyn is one of the largest hillforts in Wales. Like similar sites, it developed over an extended period of time and was substantially expanded during the Iron Age ultimately becoming a multivallate site which probably served as a regional centre for the Ordovices tribe. In September 1644 Royalist forces mustered within its earthworks prior to the Battle of Montgomery.

Walk directions

  1. Step 1

Start at the Tan y Mur car park.

  2. Step 2

Go to road and turn right towards centre of town.

  3. Step 3

Do not enter town square but carry on along Princes Street.

  4. Step 4

Go downhill ignoring turning off to Chirbury and Shrewsbury. At next right turn to Forden cross over to pavement between the roads and carry along road signposted Newtown.

  5. Step 5

Carry along pavement until just past de-restriction signs. As road bears round to right cross over very carefully to gate into field with a metal footpath finger post.

  6. Step 6

Go through gate and then right up through field on grass path to entrance to wood.

  7. Step 7

Soon after entering wood take the path to right leading to a wooden footpath gate.

  8. Step 8

Go through gate and follow well marked path through woodland until you reach a stile and go over into a field.

  9. Step 9

Follow field path initially going slightly downhill then straight ahead with the hedge on your right coming up to meet you. In a short distance and near the highest point of the hedge you will find a metal footpath gate in the hedge.

  10. Step 10

Proceed through gate and turn left in the direction of a grain silo tower.

  11. Step 11

As you drop down diagonally through the field a hedge comes into view and you need to aim for a metal gate about 2/3rds along the hedge.

  12. Step 12

Through the gate and then aim slightly uphill towards a gap in the line of coniferous trees. As you rise up then aim for a gap in trees with a hill behind (i.e. to the left of the previous gap). A dip will come into view with a double metal gate which you need to go through.

  13. Step 13

Go through the gates bearing right towards large concrete slurry pit and footpath gate in hedge.

  14. Step 14

Through the gate and then straight across the field to double metal gates in corner of hedge.

  15. Step 15

After the gates, keep the hedge on your left for a few metres until you reach a footpath gate in  the hedge.

  16. Step 16

Once through the gate go slightly left to top left corner of field to another footpath gate. Notice the Montgomeryshire War Memorial slightly to the right on the far hill as you walk up the field.

  17. Step 17

After the gate turn right towards barns which you will reach through another footpath gate in the corner of the field and another into the farmyard. Take care as cattle usually in this area.

  18. Step 18

Go straight ahead through the farmyard and out through the farmgate onto a drive which leads to the Hill Road.

  19. Step 19

Turn left along this lane and back into Montgomery.
