Walking For Life: Harlescott, The Lantern Walk

An easy 2.5km (3.5km with extension) from The Lantern Community Building in Harlescott, Shrewsbury

A short walk starting from The Lantern in Sundorne,  around the Harlescott area of Shrewsbury.

You will follow the route along part of the Old Shrewsbury Canal and experience brilliant views of the River Severn and surrounding countryside

 

Walk directions

  1. Start

    Turn left out of The Lantern car park, cross onto the right hand pavement of Meadow Farm Drive, walk towards the roundabout and take the second exit.

  2. Step 2

    Follow the pavement as it bears right just before you reach Sundorne Road.

  3. Step 3

    Cross over Sundorne Road opposite the TA centre.

  4. Step 4

    Once over Sundorne Road turn right and continue along the pavement for 400m until you reach Lesley Owen Way.

  5. Step 5

    Turn left onto Lesley Owen Way, keep to the left as the pavement branches and follow it away from the road onto a public footpath.

  6. Step 6

    At the bottom of the footpath turn left onto a cycle path and continue for approximately 10 minutes with Shrewsbury Old Canal on your left and the River Severn down below on your right, until you see a track on your left opposite a wildlife spot.
    If you wish to extend your walk at this point follow the Canal walk extension A-G below.

     

  7. Step 7

    Turn left onto path following blue signs for the Sports Village & Sundorne Road.

  8. Step 8

    Cross Sundorne Road at the traffic lights. Turn left and follow pavement for 50m to Meadow Close.

  9. Step 9

    Turn Right into Meadow Close to the Roundabout. Cross the Roundabout onto Meadow Farm Drive.

  10. Step 10

    Turn right back into The Lantern car park.

  11. Canal walk extension

    Follow points A-B

  12. A

    Continue along the cycle path for approximately 10-15 minutes until you approach a narrow path on your left just before the gate at the end of the track.

  13. B

    Turn left onto the narrow path, through some trees and onto Shrewsbury Sports Village Recreation Fields. Continue straight up the fields walking parallel to Pimley Hall Drive on your right until you reach Sundorne Road.

  14. C

    Cross straight over Sundorne Road at the safest place and follow the pavement left handed, past Claverley Road to a T-junction with Moston Road.

  15. D

    Turn right onto Moston Road and continue on the left hand pavement for a couple of minutes.

  16. E

    Take the first left onto Ebury Avenue and continue to the roundabout.

  17. F

    Turn right at the roundabout onto Meadow Farm Drive.

  18. G

    Turn right back into The Lantern car park.
