Wenlock: Perkley Walk

Wenlock Walks - Perkley Walk 3.1 mile

The Wenlock Walks are five short circular walks which start at the clock tower in Much Wenlock square, opposite the Guildhall and the museum. None of them is more than 3 miles, and each one can be walked in two hours or less. Each walk takes you out of the town and into our glorious countryside. They can get muddy so you’ll need strong shoes, but once you’ve walked all these you’ll want to walk some more!

This starts by taking you up a narrow wooded gully, out into open field, and then up a further hill with views of the Clee Hills. You come back down the hill into Much Wenlock, with a long, pleasant sight of the town below you.

Much Wenlock

The historic town of Much Wenlock has much to offer with shops, restaurants and pubs to refresh the weary walker. In the town museum you can learn where to find fossils and the social history of the town from the arrival of the Romans in the 1st century through to the Victorians. And of course how the town inspired the birth of the modern Olympic Games.

Walk directions

  1. Start

FOLLOW THE PURPLE MARKERS FOR 5 KM

From the Clock Tower, face the Guildhall and then turn right along Barrow St, until you reach the Raven Hotel. Turn right into St. Mary’s Road, and follow it until it reaches the main road A458. (Marker 1) At the garage, go over the main road at the crossing (take care), and go through a large farm gate.

  2. Step 2

Follow the path to a kissing-gate, and turn left up a wooded track. (Marker 2) Keep the hedge on your left, as you reach the top of the long, narrow wood.

  3. Step 3

Keep the hedge on your left as you reach the top of the long narrow wood, take the diagonal path down the large field below for 500m until you meet the track for farm vehicles. (Marker 3)

  4. Step 4

Turn right on to a vehicle track, and follow it round to the right, head to the right of the ruined farm buildings. Take great care here as traffic is fast and visibility is poor (Marker 4)

  5. Step 5

Keep the hedgerow on your left. The path heads across the field, joining a path straight up the hill, alongside the hedge on the right. The path passes through trees, to the right of the house and garden, to meet Bourton Rd. (Marker 5)

  6. Step 6

Turn right and after 200 m, just before the brown sign for Much Wenlock, cross the road with care and go through a kissing gate. (Marker 6) Cross the field to the far right hand corner.

  7. Step 7

Pass through a small metal gate, and over a stile. Follow the path between the hedge and the fence and where it turns left continue straight ahead and over the stile. (Marker 7)

  8. Step 8

Descend the hill, keeping the hedge on your right, until you reach a fingerpost level with an isolated tree. Take the left turn, following the marker, down to the path along the foot of the field. Then turn right, to reach a gap in the stone wall, opposite a white cottage. (Marker 8)

  9. Step 9

Go through the gap, then right down a lane to the main road. Turn right, and use the crossing to cross the main road just after the old garage (take care). The Shrewsbury Road will lead you to the end of the High Street, and back into Much Wenlock.
