Explore the Quarry Floor
Wander through birch and willow woodland growing where heavy industry once stood, with exposed cliff faces and scree slopes telling the story of the site’s past.
All-Ability Walks
Enjoy the new accessible path looping around the wildflower hay meadow, with resurfaced routes making it easier for all visitors to explore.
Wildlife Spotting
Look for slow worms, grassland butterflies, and, if you’re lucky, the nationally scarce Red‑tailed Cuckoo Bee. The vibrant meadow attracts a variety of pollinators throughout summer.

Nills Hill Quarry is a testament to nature’s remarkable ability to reclaim and transform. Once quarried for quartzite and later used as landfill, the site has been reborn as a 6‑hectare Local Nature Reserve. Its geology is still on show in dramatic cliff faces and scree slopes, while the quarry floor has developed into a mosaic of habitats—from pioneering birch and willow woodland to restored boggy scrapes alive with invertebrates.
A 2012 restoration project created a flourishing wildflower hay meadow, now managed for biodiversity and supporting rare species such as the Red‑tailed Cuckoo Bee. Recent access improvements, including an all‑ability path, make this peaceful reserve easier for everyone to enjoy. It’s a small but fascinating corner of Shropshire where history, wildlife, and regeneration come together beautifully.
