With over 50 to choose from, when the county’s archaeologist calls this hillfort ‘a gem,’ you know you’re in for a treat.
Why isn’t it better known? Until 2008 it was only accessible via a long and steep climb. Now, thanks to a permissive path from the Shropshire Way its massive ramparts and ditches can be enjoyed by all. This hillfort is doubly unusual. It is one of the few with a spring – The Burrow has two – and it has been partly excavated. When one of the ‘hut platforms’ was examined, the archaeologists found the gullies and post holes of at least two circular huts.
