Cheswardine Walks – Walk 5 – Doley Farm, Lipley

A 4.25 cicular walk across farmland and along country lanes

This moderate 4.25 mile circular walk starts from Cheswardine Parish Hall and heads out into the farmland to the north-east of the village towards Lipley.  The route takes you through farmland and down country lanes with lovely views of Cheswardine hall and St Swithun’s Church.  Please be aware of traffic along the country lanes and you may also encounter livestock on farmland.  This walk is one of six produced by Cheswardine Walking Group, a downloadable summary of these is available below along with the leaflet for walk 5.

Cheswardine

Cheswardine is a rural parish situated about four and a half miles to the south of Market Drayton and adjacent to the border with Staffordshire.  It is comprised of Cheswardine village, the hamlets of Ellerton, Soudley and Chipnall, and small settlements in the surrounding countryside.  The parish church is dedicated to St Swithun and overlooks Cheswardine from the hill at the top of the village.  The village boast two pubs, The Red Lion and The Fox and Hounds with a third pub situated a short distance away on the canal.  For more information about the village and what has been going on please visit the Cheswardine Parish Council website.

Walk directions

  1. Step 1

    Turn right at the Parish Hall into Podmore Road. At the end turn left onto Cheswardine High Street. Carry straight on towards the church and turn right into Church Lane.

  2. Step 2

    After 350m, about half way down the lane, go over a stile on the right, and go through a gateway then straight ahead across 3 fields.

  3. Step 3

    Turn right onto the lane and follow it round to the left and keep ahead for 1.35 km until Doley Farm is reached on the right.

  4. Step 4

    Immediately after Doley Farm go through a farm gate on the left and follow the green lane, passing a pond on the right. It will eventually open out through a gate, into fields. Keep straight ahead going over a stile.

  5. Step 5

    Cross over the lane leading to Lipley Hall Farm and go straight ahead over fields indicated with a small waymarker arrow, crossing stiles and through gates keeping the hedge and wooded area to the left.

  6. Step 6

    Enter a driveway through gates by the house and turn left into Moss Lane.

  7. Step 7

    After 350m turn left over a stile opposite the entrance to Lipley Farm. NB Sometimes there is livestock in these fields. Go straight across 2 fields heading towards the wooded area. Skirt the wooded area keeping it to the right. St Swithun's Church will come into view. Heading straight for the church, go across the fields through several gates. The last field is where the Old Cricket pitch was located. Along the route there are magnificent views of Cheswardine Hall which is now a Residential Home.

  8. Step 8

    Turn right out of the field keeping the Gate House to the right and turn immediately left along Church Lane back into Cheswardine.

  9. Step 9

    At the church turn left and walk through Cheswardine village to Podmore Road on the right. Turn right and the Parish Hall is located on the left.
