Family Friendly Cycle Routes: Gatacre Gobowen Gambol

A 6 mile loop exploring northern Oswestry and Gobowen and the countryside around Old Oswestry Hillfort and Park Hall Farm. A couple of steep climbs and some sections cross busy roads. Recommended for older children with experience of cycling on the road.

This is recommended for more experienced child cyclists as there are a couple of sections of busy road. The route crosses the A5 – this can be done on foot.

Cycling code

  • Always follow the Highway Code
  • Be considerate to other users, and give way to pedestrians and horse riders
  • Take particular care at junctions, when cycling downhill and on loose surfaces
  • Ride in single file on narrow or busy roads
  • Consider wearing a helmet and high visibility clothing

Ride directions

  1. Step 1

    Start at Gatacre car park, on Gatacre Avenue. Take the path round the sports field from the back of the car park. 

  2. Step 2

    Turn left on to the road and cycle past Old Oswestry Hill Fort. Take care. 

  3. Step 3

    Turn left at the small T junction, unsigned. 

  4. Step 4

    Turn right at the crossroads (R455) and descend to bridge over the A5. 

  5. Step 5

    Turn left at T junction (R455 sign)

  6. Step 6

    Bear right at mini roundabout. Cycle into Gobowen and over the level crossing - care needed. 

  7. Step 7

    Join the Old Whittington Road

  8. Step 8

    Turn right onto Twmpath Road towards the hospital. Pass Derwyn College on the RHS which has a nice cafe. 

  9. Step 9

    Turn left at the hospital on to North Drive and past Park Hall. 

     

  10. Step 10

    Turn right onto Robinson Way just after the recreation/ Rugby ground. 

  11. Step 11

    Follow road round to the left (Garrison Way). As you reach the Whittington road stay on the pavement on the right hand side up to the roundabout. This is a very busy roundabout with the A5 joining. Cross on foot using the pedestrian refuges. 

    Join the Whittington Road, if preferred, walk to the next junction (approx 100m) using the footways and dropped kerbs. 

  12. Step 12

    Pass under rail bridge and turn left at T junction onto a cycle path on the Gobowen road (B5069)

  13. Step 13

    Turn right onto Llwyn Road by corner shop. Take care. busy road crossing. 

  14. Step 14

    Turn left at roundabout onto Old Fort Road

  15. Step 15

    Turn right onto Gittin Street to return to Gatacre.
