Ludlow Country Walks, Walk 7: Ludlow, Mortimer Forest Circular

Walk directions

1. Start

   From the Castle Square take one of the paths around the Castle down to the road opposite 'Mr Underhill's' Restaurant. Turn left then right over Dinham Bridge.

2. Step 2

   Take the path on the left by a finger post signed 'Mortimer Trail'. Follow this path bearing right up a series of steps for about 400 yards until you reach a road.

3. Step 3

   Tum right downhill for 50 yards and cross over to the lane, Lower Wood Road. Continue along the lane for 25 yards.

4. Step 4

   Tum left at the finger post signed 'Mortimer Trail'. Where the path splits take the left, climbing up through trees for 200 yards to the Wigmore road.

5. Step 5

   Tum left for 20 yards then cross over the road. Pass the entrance to North Farm on your left and follow the fingerpost to the left for the bridleway.

6. Step 6

   On the bridleway, climb the sunken path for just over half a mile until you reach the end of a Forest School Enclosure. There is an open space, a beech tree and a bench, with fence and fields on the left.

7. Step 7

   Turn sharp right on to a broad track with red discs which continues for 250 yards. Turn right at the forestry road and down the hill past a metal vehicle barrier, forestry offices and car park to the road. You are on the 'Mortimer Trail' once more.

8. Step 8

   Cross the road to the lay by and take the narrow path to the left down into the trees. Then after about 10 yards turn right at a way mark post. Follow this path back until step 4 and down to the road, then re-trace your steps back to Castle Square.
