Minsterley Yellow Walk: Hills & Quarries

Walk directions

1. Start

   Leave the Village Hall and turn right to the roundabout. Turn right at the roundabout and then immediately right up Callow Lane. Take Callow Lane out of the village towards Habberley for ½ mile approximately. As the road bends right, take the footpath that climbs into the wood on your left. In a few yards turn left along the Old Snailbeach Light Railway Track. After 100 yards turn right up a path that climbs steeply through the Callow Wood to a kissing gate at the top of the wood (Callow Hill iron age fort is to the top left of the path).

2. Step 2

   Keeping close to the hedge on your right cross the field to a stile. Turn left and after 50 yards bear right down the field to a wooden kissing gate into Poles Coppice wood. Follow the path to a junction (the main quarry is a short distance to your right and gives you a glimpse of the local geology) and turn left along a wider path to a small car park. Turn right back into the wood at the barrier and follow the path ahead past a picnic area on your left (fine views across to Earls Hill). Ignore the path to your right and further on the bridleway to your left and follow the path through the woods to steps that climb up to the right. Follow the path ahead for 100 yards to a wooden kissing gate on the left.

3. Step 3

   Enter the field and, initially keeping the fence to your left, cross to a kissing gate by a field gate. Follow the track to the Habberley-Minsterley road.

4. Step 4

   Turn right down the road to a waymark post on your left. After ½ mile take the path down into the wood to a waymark post and turn right to another post. Turn left along the right hand edge of the field to an open gateway and continue down the field with the hedge now on your left to a gate into a playing field. In a few yards turn left through an opening in the hedge and descend some steps to cross a wooden bridge to a tarmac path. Continue ahead through houses to the car park. Alternatively, turn right to the Crown & Sceptre Inn. (As you approach the traffic island look out for the historic gents urinal set in the wall on your right – Sorry but it is no longer in use!)
