Oswestry – High Fawr

Number 2 of 5 short walks around Oswestry

This walk starts at the bus station and goes towards the north of town, past the fire station and up Mound Road.  Half a mile up Mount Road, turn left onto a footpath (this is a very interesting bit as you dog leg a few times and go over a stream).  Then up into open fields, with lovely views and you can see Oswestry on your left below.  Turn back into a beautiful old drover’s lane and follow this into town (this is always muddy).

Walk directions

  1. Start

Exit the Bus Station towards the Railway Tavern, and turn left up Beatrice Street. After a couple of hundred yards turn right up the hill which is Castle Street and follow this road until the crossroads at Willow Street.

  2. Step 2

Turn right and go up Willow Street to junction with the Fire Station. Carry straight on (left fork) up Mount Road for nearly a mile. Just after Water Treatment works and before houses, cross over stile (left) and bear right.

  3. Step 3

Cross over the next stile and bear right again. Cross a stream and turn left, then follow path for 10 metres and cross back over stream. Cross another stile.

  4. Step 4

Follow path bearing right and upwards through copse, over stile into field.  Walk straight over field and go through the gate. Ignore the sign to right and bear left and walk over field to next stile.

  5. Step 5

Over stile, go straight on over next stile and turn left through a metal gate. Walk down muddy path and go through next metal gate.

  6. Step 6

At gate turn left and continue down track. When you reach a road, go straight across and continue down track.

  7. Step 7

When track joins Brynhafod Lane carry on down this and into Brynhafod Road. With playing field on right, join Welsh Walls and turn left. Follow Welsh Walls, keeping park on right hand side, go over the crossroads at Willow Street and return via Castle Street.
