Wellington 360 – Wrockwardine Walks – Longdon Aqueduct – Route 5

Wrockwardine - Allscott - Longdon Aqueduct

This route combines with the shorter Wrockwardine to Allscott walk to form a satisfying longer walk visiting Longdon Aqueduct.

Walk directions

  1. Start

Start from the church, going slightly downhill towards the War Memorial and take the lane to the right of the Old Smithy, then shortly after, up a small bank on the left and cross a stile into a grass field.

  2. Step 2

Cross the field for about 100 yards (90 metres) to a double stile into a large descending field. The path will take you directly to the far left corner of this field, to a gate out onto a busy road (beware of traffic!).

  3. Step 3

Turn left and follow the road under the railway bridge, then take the first lane on the right towards Allscott. After about 350 yards (320 metres) turn left up a short grass drive immediately before Redwood House.

  4. Step 4

Go through the gate into the field and follow the hedge on your right. As you approach some tall trees, pass through into the field on your right and follow the hedge now on your left to a gate into a private residence, and out through their driveway.

  5. Step 5

Turn right towards Allscott and Longdon keeping an eye out for traffic (no road edging here). Pass Back Lane on the right and proceed round the next bend to Allscott Mill. Turn left into the driveway and follow this past the first entrance on the right and then keeping to the right past the B & B to cross the footbridge over the river.

  6. Step 6

Turn right and follow the path along the river bank until reaching a drainage channel where the path bends to the left. Follow the path through 2 sets of gates into the farmyard at Isombridge Farm. Keep right  and follow the track bending first to the right, then to the left through the farmyard to meet the lane.

  7. Step 7

Turn right and follow the lane for approx. 2 miles/3 km to Longdon. At the T-junction turn right onto the B5063 and cross the bridge over the river. Thomas Telford’s Aqueduct (the world’s first cast iron aqueduct, built in 1797, now a grade 1 listed Ancient Monument) can immediately be seen to the left. If desired, from a lay-by further along on the left, follow the signposted path through 2 kissing gates to the aqueduct and then return to the road using the same path. Continue on the B5063 passing the church, then take the lane on the right before the footpath ends, passing Redhouse Barns at the corner. Follow the lane past Lower Farm to the point it turns 90 degrees right.

  8. Step 8

Carry straight on across the field in front of you towards the stile in the hedgerow ahead (the Solar Farm can be seen to the left). Cross the stile and continue on heading for the gateway to Rushmoor Lane. (NB. The area near the gateway can be very muddy. If this is the case, follow the field edge to the road). Turn left, cross the road, and continue until past the access lane to Cheshire Coppice. Just after this gated entrance, and before the entrance to the Solar Farm, turn right over a stile in the hedge and cross the field to another stile in the far right corner. Go over the stile, to the access lane and turn left through the gate.

  9. Step 9

Cross the bridge over a drainage channel and turn right following the path beside the channel to a stile at the end of the field. Carry straight on into the woodland and follow this path all the way to the next stile which leads out into open fields. Turn right, along the field edge, and continue to the entry gate on the right (marked “49” on OS maps).

  10. Step 10

Exit through the gate and turn left onto Rushmoor Lane and follow this until you have passed the main entrance to the Severn Trent Treatment Plant. Turn left through a kissing gate in the hedge and cross the field to another kissing gate at the far side. Turn right and follow the path to Back Lane. Turn right and follow this round as it bends left, then turn left at the junction to return to the Plough Inn and at the main road, cross straight over.

  11. Step 11

The path heads straight across the field, up a small bank to a stile, then over the railway line (beware of trains!) to another stile into the next field. Continue in the same direction across a larger field for about 400 yards (365 metres) until you have a hedge on your right. Follow the hedge until you find a double stile over a small bridge into the next field.

  12. Step 12

Follow the edge of the field keeping the hedge on your left, then over a stile into narrow passage and over another stile onto a lane. Turn left and follow the lane back to the war memorial and up to the church.
